Johannes Meister studied at music colleges in Cologne and Vienna. After receiving his diploma in orchestral conducting he participated in masterclasses with Leonard Bernstein, Helmuth Rilling, Eric Ericson and Gerd Albrecht.
He first came to Switzerland in 1987 when he was engaged as the choral director of Lucerne Theatre. Subsequently he began taking regular roles as guest conductor with various German radio choirs.
From 1994 to 1998 he was chorus master at the Vienna State Opera. During this time he prepared many performances with the Vienna State Opera Chorus and was responsible for premieres and concerts under the direction of Claudio Abbado, Carlo Maria Guilini, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti and Marcello Viotti, among others.
Since his return to Switzerland in 1998 he has conducted various concert choirs in Zug and he has been the main lecturer in charge of the CH I/II training programme for choral conducting.
As well as conducting the Zug Chamber Choir, Johannes Meister is also vice-president of the Swiss Federation Europa Cantat and acts as chief expert and judge for the Swiss Choral Association (Schweizerische Chorvereinigung).
