Requiem Highlights
Tobias Brommann has compiled his requiem highlights from our program, including lesser-known works by Biber, Lachner, and Jommelli. Have fun discovering!
Tobias Brommann was cantor at Berlin Cathedral from 2003 to 2021, where he led the Berlin Cathedral Choir with its various ensembles. Since 2021 he has been cantor of the parish "Zum guten Hirten" in Berlin. His heart beats for traditional choral music, but also works from off the beaten track. For him, culture should move and "may, indeed should, also be contentious". Thus, in addition to the regularly performed traditional works, his program also includes little-known and unusual works as well as compositions of different styles and genres, from Gregorian music to motets and cantatas to the largest and most elaborate oratorios. Tobias Brommann has many years of experience with various choirs and was an assistant to Eric Ericson and Michael Gläser.

Brahms’s Deutsches Requiem (German Requiem): you only need to mention this work, and many choral singers spontaneously sigh with pleasure. It is one of those works in the magnificent canon of choral literature which everyone wants to sing at some point. At least once. But what about the many short, choral-symphonic works by Brahms, for example the Schicksalslied (Song of Destiny) or Nänie? These pieces are no less magnificent, but they present choral directors with the challenge of how to find suitable works to program with them. Tobias Brommann, Choral director at Berlin Cathedral, gives some tips.
