4 Questions for Mårten Jansson
An Interview
Swedish composer Mårten Jansson is a sought-after and frequently performed choral composer enjoying popularity all around the world. In this interview he answers four questions.
Your most emotional musical experience to date?
Oh, that’s a hard one… If I only can pick one I do believe I need to pick when I first heard Claude Debussy’s Trois nocturnes for the first time. It was such an eye opener for me. I had never heard music composed in that way before.
Where do you prefer to compose?
In my study in the basement. A room my sons tend to call a mancave…
What are you working on at the moment?
I’m currently working on four movements to be used in Bach’s Magnificat instead of Bach’s four optional Christmas movements. The American lyricist Charles Anthony Silvestri has written new lyrics especially for this and this will be premiered in May 2025 by Jugendchor Hochtaunus, conducted by Tristan Meister, included, as intended in Bach’s Magnificat.
When you’re not composing or making music, then…
I teach music theory, composition and choir at Uppsala estetiska gymnasium and Uppsala kulturskola. Apart from that I try to spend as much time as I can with my family playing boardgames and watching sports.
